The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Katalin Karikó and Dr. Drew Weissman for their groundbreaking work in developing messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine technology, which played a pivotal role in creating effective COVID-19 vaccines. Karikó, a professor at the University of Szeged in Hungary, and Dr. Weissman, director of the Penn Institute for RNA Innovations, will share the 11 million Swedish krona ($1.02 million) prize. Their work led to mRNA vaccines like Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna’s, which do not trigger harmful immune responses. These vaccines have been administered over 13 billion times, saving countless lives and enabling societies to reopen amid the pandemic.
