A team of international scientists has discovered what may be some of the earliest and largest galaxies in the universe, according to a study published in Nature. Using data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the researchers found four galaxies containing almost as many stars as the modern Milky Way, which could date back to 500 to 700 million years after the Big Bang, or more than 13 billion years ago. The team said the discovery challenges conventional theories of how the universe evolved, and that further study could help push the limits of our understanding of cosmology.
